11 with the Eleven: Zach Steinberger

  • Trevor Ruszkowski/Indy Eleven

NUVO: If you had a walkout song like baseball players do, what would it be?

Zach Steinberger: It’s either going to be — depending on the mood — “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey or “My Humps” by Black Eyed Peas.

NUVO: What’s your favorite movie?

Steinberger: You’re going to have to give me a genre I’m a big movie guy.

One comedy, one action?

One comedy, I’m going to have to give you two, Dumb and Dumber and Anchorman — I can’t decide between those two. For action I’ve got to go Black Hawk Down.

NUVO: What’s the best goal celebration you’ve seen live?

Steinberger: There was one game I played in Slovakia actually where one of the players — there were no fans in the stadium during the game — one of the players scored on our team and he ran and jumped in the stands where there were no fans and then crossed his legs and started golf clapping for himself. It was hysterical.

NUVO: What’s your perfect meal?

Steinberger: Am I cooking it or am I going out? Do I have to play a game the next day or is this going to be guilty food?

[Editor’s note: WHO’S RUNNING THIS INTERVIEW???? We agree that he has a two week break and can eat whatever without consequences]

Okay now we’re talking. If I’ve got two weeks off I’m probably going to be at In-N-Out Burger every other day. I’m going to get the four by four animal style with animal style fries. It is phenomenal.

NUVO: If you had to live the rest of your life without one of your senses, which would you choose?

Steinberger: I’ve actually played this game a lot of times and there is no way to come out on top. If I have to lose one of the senses I’d lose the ability to hear because you’ve got sign language.

NUVO: What’s your favorite holiday?

Steinberger: Hands down Christmas.

Why’s that?

In my line of work I don’t really get to go home that much so it’s kind of nice to have a couple weeks off and be able to go home and see all the family I haven’t seen all year and that’s really the only time I get to do that.

NUVO: Say your about to miss your game flight and you can only grab 3 items, what do you grab?

[Editors note: This interview was scheduled minutes before his flight so I came up with a specific question, it got pushed back but I really liked the question so we’re still using it.]

Steinberger: Obviously I grab my cleats, I grab a good book, and I grab my laptop.

NUVO: What’s your favorite book?

Steinberger: That is a tough question. I just finished The Lone Survivor this year and that was probably one of the best books I’ve ever read. It was super enticing and interesting and there were so many things I didn’t know about Navy SEALs and that whole training, special ops. So it was really cool learn about that from someone who lived it.

NUVO: Say you get a big signing bonus and you’re trying to stroll through the streets looking like a big shot, what are you driving?

Steinberger: My dream car has always been a Mercedes G-Wagon. Those cars are so cool, it’s nice but its not too flashy.

NUVO: If you could have any animal as a pet what would it be?

Steinberger: A pet monkey. I’d come home and dress him up in a suit of armor and we could have sword battles.

NUVO: What’s your favorite part about Indianapolis?

Steinberger: One of the good things about it is that it’s small enough you can get anywhere you want, you don’t have to worry about traffic but it’s big enough where there’s always something do, whether that’s going to Broad Ripple and getting some food or running on the Monon, going to the zoo, going to see a Colts game, Pacers game, it’s got everything, but it’s not a huge city where you’re completely overwhelmed. You can enjoy the slow lifestyle and enjoy all the benefits of a bigger city as well.
