April 2, Bier Brewery’s “Sixty Five: Scottish Style Reddish Ale” debuts in cans at the iconic neighborhood gathering place at 5170 N. College Ave. to celebrate the 1951 ownership by Russ Settle and Fran Gasper of Red Key Tavern.
Following Gasper’s death in 1970, Russ Settle became sole owner and since Russ’s death on April 4, 2010 Russ’s son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Dollie, have carried on, along with their children.
“Jim only found it right to have Darren brew him an anniversary bier,” explained Bier spokesperson Sarah Buschmann, when I asked about the Red Key / Bier connection.
“Sixty Five” will be available only at the Red Key and Bier taproom. Show up any time on April 2.
Other ‘births’ at Red Key Tavern include Russ’s Rules and the dictum “Cash only, Just like the olden days. But there’s an ATM on site. Just like the newer days.” What else is legendary? Wall paintings from 1933 when the building’s origin as a Piggly Wiggly grocery had a makeover in 1933 under the name of Old English Tavern as one of Indianapolis’ Prohibition Repeal bars. If you’re a new patron to The Rd Key, don’t miss the juke-box with 45s— #126 is highly recommended by Dan Wakefield, whose 1970 novel [and 1997 film] “Going All the Way” feature Red Key Tavern. Ronald Tierney’s Deets Shanahan mystery series hints to The Red Key as the detective’s favorite libation spot, but be assured a claim of Kurt Vonnegut hanging out at The Red Key or writing his novels in a booth there have no validity. What is true are $1 bills heaved up to stick to the ceiling—if you don’t know why, ask.

Brew Link Tap Room opened March 19 at 212 E. Main St., in Plainfield. Founders Adam Burke and Ruari Crabbe are introducing two beers in one 4 pack. The promo reads: “Ebony Oatmeal Stout and Ivory White Stout live together in perfect harmony. A classic oatmeal stout combined with a "white" stout with cocoa nibs, vanilla beans and coffee from Liberation Roasting.” Meisterburgher Pils was on for the Tap Room opening.
April 1: Metazoa Brewing Company Grand Opening starts at 11 a.m. at 140 S. College Ave. with house beers for sale. Seasonals and one-offs will be released at 3 p.m. The Party and Festivities start at 6 p.m. Food trucks include Pierogi Love, Nacho Mama and Wild Boar Barbecue. Come prepared to catch a dazzling view of Downtown Indy.

“As part of the historically Irish neighborhood, Irish Hill, we couldn't miss the opportunity to celebrate this piece of our city and brewery's history,” said Erin Stevens, Indiana City Events & Marketing Coordinator, when I asked about Indiana City pouring beer from a pop-up spot spot along the 2016 Parade route. “We wanted to share our traditional Irish Hill Red Ale with the city as part of this 36-year tradition benefiting the Indy Sports Foundation, organizer of the St. Patrick’s Day parade.”
Indiana City donated 100% of the sales of Irish Hill at their parade route booth to the Indy Sports Foundation. Organized in 1984 to promote national and international amateur sports, and to give assistance and support to persons and organizations engaged in such activities, the Indy Sports Foundation is a donor-supported charitable entity. ISF has underwritten causes including summer camps for kids with disabilities, Special Olympic camps, Big Brother, and other amateur athletic events such as the Indiana High School Girls Volleyball State Finals Banquet.
“We brewed Irish Hill Ale, a traditional Irish Red with sweet malt flavor and subtle hop bitterness, to honor the rich Irish heritage of the neighborhood we’re in. Irish Hill was home to the hard working, blue-collar Irish immigrants who quite literally built Indianapolis,” said Stevens. “We had a great time and we can't wait until next year!

Central State Brewing released their debut canned beer on March 19, at The Koelschip at 2505 Delaware St. “Lazer Raptor is a Gose-style beer brewed with lime and cranberry. This tart style gets an extra kick in the pucker department thanks to the crisp acidic bite of the cran-lime combo,” reads the description. At Koelschip you’ll also find Raptor on tap “as well as our new Meyer Lemon Berliner called Halsdurschlag that we brewed with our buddies at No Coast Reserve in Bloomington,” reads the news release. “As always we want to remind you that The Koelschip is located in a residential area, and ask that you please be respectful of our neighbors. GOSEANNA!”

Sun King announced, “Johan the Barleywine was the first batch of beer ever brewed at Sun King. Johan has a huge malt punch balanced with Pacific Northwest hops. This award winning beer is now the first batch of beer brewed at our Fishers Taproom & Small-Batch Brewery.” A scheduled special release at the Fishers Taproom will be announced after Johan the Barleywine has cellared for at least one year.
Mad Anthony Brewing Company's first 12 oz. canned beer, Six to Midnight Session IPA, is available at all Mad Anthony Brewing Company locations and on shelves at your favorite bottle shop. Description reads: “Six to Midnight is a deliciously approachable hoppy beer with a lighter body and lower alcohol content than your standard IPA, making this the one to enjoy all day long. Featuring the coveted Citra hop, this ale has a hoppy kick.”
March 23: Flat12 - The MilkBar Lacto-Matic Milk Stout Tap Takeover from noon through 8 p.m., with a variety of Milk Stouts on tap. Check out the full lineup HERE.
March 24: Both Sun King locations - Noon release of King's Reserve Series Hot Rod Lincoln. Release says, this beer “integrates the gingerbread and dark brown sugar flavors of Timmie Russian-Style Imperial Stout with flavors of tart cherry, dark chocolate, and oak.”
March 24: Flix Brewhouse – 5 p.m. tapping of two special casks and the premier of Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. The Dark Pint is Umbra Chocostout with Junior Mints (Mint Chocolate Stout); the Lighter is Kryptonite - Lupulus IPA with Key Lime.
This will also be a "Buy the Beer, Keep the Glass" promotion with a special souvenir glass. Head brewer Chris Knott posted a brew-in-process video that’s not to be missed.
March 26: Two releases at Indiana City - First is, Sister City Kölsch, honoring Cologne, Germany, the birthplace of kölsch beer and one of Indy’s eight Sister Cities. “We craft Sister City in adherence to brewing guidelines drafted by Cologne brewers to preserve consistency and quality for this delicious style. It’s a delicately balanced, lightly hopped, straw colored ale that drinks like a crisp clean lager,” reports ICB. Second is Red Collar, “A hoppy deep-red beer featuring a touch of roasted malt flavor and resinous pine hop character. “This beer is dedicated to hard-working Hoosiers who find themselves somewhere between white collar and blue collar.”
March 28: Sun King Brewing Co. - Nine13sports and Sun King Brewery team up for the Malted Mile Mondays, a one mile stationary bike race on the same equipment that Nine13sports uses for programs across Central Indiana. It goes from 5:30 p.m. through 7 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to the fastest three of the evening. “We'll provide the bikes, you provide the power!” $1 of every pint sold during the event will be donated to Nine13sports to support programming across central Indiana!

April 1: Chilly Water releases their second in the Turn It Up Series — Sticky Fingers Breakfast Stout [a limit of three bottles per customer].
April 1: Upland Brewing Co. is releasing REVved UP Coffee Blonde Ale on draught and in six-packs. “The color of a beer can be deceptive,” reports Upland. “If you judged this beer on its light appearance, you may be in for a surprise when it delivers a full, creamy body and rich roasted flavors. The malt portfolio is delicate enough to showcase the coffee character, yet strong enough to support a distinctive chocolaty roast character that one might typically expect to find in a much darker colored beer.” At Upland tap rooms in early April as a collaboration with Chicago-Based Revolution Brewing Co. and Dark Matter Coffee.
April 2: Hinchtown Hammerdown release and Can Prix event at the Flat12 Bierwerks Indianapolis taproom now has a companion event, according to spokesperson Valarie Green.
“May 6, Flat12 Bierwerks in collaboration with Verizon IndyCar Series driver, James Hinchcliffe, will release The Bricks Red IPA,” a direct opposite to the sessionable Hinchtown Hammerdown.
Green enthuses, “With 100 IBUs and a full tank of Centennial hops, The Bricks is the perfect beer to honor 100 years of racing in Indianapolis. This brick red IPA is complimented by the addition of milk sugar, to commemorate the tradition of the 500 winner drinking a bottle of milk on Victory Lane and kissing the bricks. This Indianapolis brewery, named after a classic game-changing racing engine, and the fast-rising IndyCar driver, Hinchcliffe, created a beer that runs 2.5 mile laps around the others.”
“Hinchtown Hammerdown will always be the easy-drinking, go-to race day beer, and it’s a great brew, but for the 100th year celebration, we wanted to go even bigger. The Bricks— a Red IPA brewed with milk sugar honors a great tradition in motorsports,” said James Hinchcliffe.
The limited brew will be available only on draught and in cans at the Flat 12 Indianapolis taproom.

An Indy Premiere Event
April 30, 6:30 p.m.; Foyt Wine Vault, 1182 Main St., Speedway
What happens when you blend amazing Indiana craft beer with great looking brewery apparel? Naturally, a craft beer fashion show is born.
Presented and hosted by Indiana On Tap and NUVO, the event is in a large, industrial warehouse connected to the award-winning Foyt Wine Vault on Main Street in Speedway. Entry into the event will be through the Foyt Wine Vault's main entrance at 1182 Main Street.
General Admission tickets $35 with entry beginning at 7:30 p.m. Only 225 VIP tickets at $55 allows entry beginning at 6:30 p.m. with access to several specialty beers, along with a reserved seat next to the runway for the fashion show. All attendees are encouraged to dress in their idea of a fashion-forward outfit, humorous or ridiculous as it may be. (Encouraged, but obviously not required).
Every attendee will also have the opportunity to 'walk the red carpet' for a photo-op. This event is the 'unofficial' kickoff to the start of May in Indianapolis, the greatest month of the year, so expect a few racing surprises—including some vintage Indy 500 race cars on display. There will be live music and a DJ; wear your favorite dancing shoes. Delicious food available for purchase through the Foyt Wine Vault's kitchen. Plentiful parking in a large parking lot behind the warehouse off of Main Street and street parking along Main Street itself.
