Be One of a Thousand

Butler University's Jordan College of Fine Arts invites the public to participate in a 1,000-person movement choir that will perform in the Butler Bowl at 6 p.m. Sept. 19 as part of The Mahler Project.

Professor of Dance Cynthia Pratt will lead the movement choir, which is based on the work done by Rudolf Laban, a dance artist and visionary, in early 20th century Germany. Laban wanted to introduce a contemporary mass dance culture, thus creating a sense of the power of community. He created movement choirs, which consist of a large group of people moving together within a choreographic structure.

"I'm keeping this in the spirit of what he did," Pratt said. "The whole purpose of the movement choir was to create urban folkdance, really. In a post-Industrial Revolution society people no longer had access to a means of reinforcing community through structured movement that previously had existed in an agrarian society. That was what Laban was after — a way to re-create a community bonding through movement."

The movements in the Butler movement choir will be based on imagery from haikus and simple enough for everyone to execute. No dance experience is necessary.
