Main Street, bracketed with beer
Speedway’s Main Street will be anchored by Indiana craft beer with Daredevil Brewing Company already at 1151 Main and incoming Big Woods Speedway at 1010 Main.
The Speedway Redevelopment Commission is inviting the public to the Big Woods Speedway groundbreaking ceremony Sept. 8 at 10 a.m., at 1010 Main St.
Big Woods co-founder Jeff McCabe announced that “Big Woods Speedway will offer the best of both its original Nashville restaurant and the Bloomington location to create a destination experience for residents and millions of visitors who come to Speedway annually.”
McCabe adds, “The 7,500-square-foot restaurant and 10,000-square-foot beer garden will serve up a full menu including artisanal pizza, pulled-pork barbecue nachos and a nationally recognized burger. The best-in-class craft beer selections include brews from Big Woods Quaff ON! Brewing Company, as well as Foyt Family Wines and other collections, and craft spirits.”
McCabe acknowledges "the support of all restaurants and businesses in the area.”
Busy Sept. 12 with Penrod & CANvitational
The 49th annual Penrod at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, 9 a.m-5 p.m., again is offering a Beer Garden featuring the signature Penrod 22 Kolsch brewed by Flat 12.
“This is the third year we have partnered with Penrod to bring a unique beer to the event, and we couldn't be more excited,” said Flat 12 head brewer Sean Manahan. “We [again] brewed a traditional Kolsch-style bier for the best day of the year! Light and crisp, the Penrod 22 is brewed with Pilsner malt and hopped with Noble American hops for an easy drinking brew. We also will be serving Walkabout Pale Ale, Upsidedown Blonde and Flat Jack Pumpkin Ale.”
Thr3e Wise Men and Upland are also serving pints in the Beer Garden that offers a relaxing experience for patrons 21+. Visitors are welcome to bring in food from nearby vendors to enjoy with brews of choice. More at: ww.penrod.org
Third annual CANvitational, bringing tastes of brews from across the U.S. is happening at Georgia St., noon-5 p.m. Host Sun King Brewing Company lists the appearance of 30 companies not currently available in Indianapolis and 26 companies that are. You get to meet the brewers who gather for the camaraderie of meeting up with each other professionally, along with outreach to patrons.
Sun King brewed a CANlaboration with Bagby Beer Company. Clayton Robinson says, “Department of Leisure Services was brewed of a mutal love of plaid pants and bronze medal winning beers. This love has brought together the brewers of Bagby Beer Company and Sun King Brewery to produce Department of Leisure Services, a ginger and makrut lime infused Belgian-Style Ale.” It debuts Sept. 12; can release is on Sept. 14. Deviate Brewing Company updates hours. “As you can understand, we are in a constant state of deviation and our hours of operation should not be excluded,” advises Co-founder Greg Ortwein. “As of this moment,” quips Ortwein, “stop in for pints and growlers at our brewery and taproom at 4004 96th St. (NE corner of 96th & Michigan Road.) Fri. 5-10 p.m.; Sat. noon-10 p.m.; Sun. noon-6 p.m. We will always be closed Monday and Tuesday to brew, but expanded weekday hours will come in the near future. We will have food trucks on site as much as possible. People are welcome to order from any local restaurant that delivers or even bring their own food (BYOF).”
Their current lineup includes seven inaugural brews from their Aug. 29 opening. Ortwein says two beers ready to tap in a few weeks are: “Nectar of the Gourds, a Pumpkin Barley Wine (tis the season), and Great Quad Almighty, a Westy 12 Belgian Quad clone.”

What makes Oktoberfest brews perfect for the start of Fall?
Their crispness and drinkability with low alcohol and low IBU’s,, according to Thr3e Wise Men. On tap now is the return of their Antonius 1742 Oktober Fest, “a crisp, bready German lager.”
Sun King says their Oktoberfest “crafted with choice German malts and Noble hops has a clean malty start with a slightly earthy hop character.”
Sun King’s other new brews on draft only are: One Track Mind, a sessionable American Pale Ale “brewed to highlight the use of Waimea hops, which provide a hoppy balance of citrus fruit, orange peel, and pine flavors” and Cream Dream 8: Hops In Space.
The RAM styles their Marzen style German Lager to deliver a big malt profile with a clean and crisp finish. It’s brewed with German malts and hops. Tappinga at Fishers and Downtown on Sept. 18.
Flat 12 says it’s an “autumn's classic golden copper hue” that’s the lure. Their visually luxuriant Oktoberfest Lager is “medium-bodied with an upfront sweet breadiness, rich malt character with pleasant mildly spicy herbal bitterness from the Noble hops.”
Oaken Barrel again is featuring their classic Oktoberfest along with King Rudi Hefeweizen at the German-American Club’s Oktoberfest celebration Sept. 10-13, at German Park, 8602. S. Meridian St., starting at 4 p.m. each day.
TwoDEEP now has Allie's Big Hitter, described as “a sessionable and refreshingly hoppy wheat ale brewed with former Colts player Ryan Diem.” The TwoDEEP TapRoom will donate 20% of all ABH pint sales to the Children’s Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation founded by Diem eleven years ago.
Upland Brewing Co. Side Trail Series #6, Falkor will be released Sept. 15 on draught at select craft beer bars and Sept. 18 on tap at all Upland retail locations.
“This beer is all about late addition hops, allowing us to create big hop aroma and flavor, without being overly bitter,” says Upland spokesperson Andrea Lutz, adding, “The aroma is complex; floral, spicy and tropical, with notes of grapefruit, lemon, passion fruit, and pine. Pleasant spicy bitterness is quickly followed by flavors of tropical and stone fruits. The body is smooth and drinkable with a touch of residual sweetness from honey malt. Orange peel and coriander provide delicate spice complexity to round out this IPA. American ale yeast helps create a smooth, low ester flavor profile.”
Upland’s annual appearance of Teddy Bear Kisses comes Sept. 15 on draught in select craft beer bars and in 4-packs. It’s on tap at Upland locations Sept. 25. Brewed as a traditional stout, it’s dark, robust, roasty and balances a luscious maltness with layers of chocolate and sweet bitterness resulting from slow aging on “fair trade cocoa nibs.”
Indiana City has Hellcat Maggie Bourbon Barrel Aged Irish Red Ale in 22oz. bombers and on limited draft at the brewery. “We filled one bourbon barrel with Irish Hill, our award winning Irish Red Ale. After a long rest in the cellar, Irish Hill slowly evolved into Hellcat Maggie – A sweet, mellow, light-bodied beer, full of delicate vanilla and oak character, mildly tart with slight wild earthiness,” reads the notice.
Kahn’s on Keystone has 4-pack cans of Tin Man’s Herald Imperial Pumpkin Ale. Launched in 2013, Tin Man says, “Herald of the Harvest appears but once a year to proclaim the axial shift towards short days and long coats. Ripe with the seasonal tastes of pumpkin and spice, this beer is a warm call to celebrate the changing season and times.” It’s hearty at 8.4% ABV with a mild hop finish.
Oaken Barrel’s new seasonal American Wheat is a distinctive style created by American brewers. A traditional wheat beer is infused with an abundance of Citra hops. “Three Floyds “Gumball Head” is an example of American Wheat,” explains owner Kwang Casey, “Come taste one for yourself.”
