Beer Buzz

Sun King Brewery's "eminently quaffable" Wee Mac Scottish Style Ale made its debut in cans at the IndyFringe Theatre/JCC Ann Katz Festival of Books Kick-off on Oct. 21. Verdict: every bit as smooth and malty poured from a can as from a tap. The rich hazelnut character with toffee undertones and a hint of Dutch cocoa, balanced by a light touch of hops makes for a year-round brown ale to pair with seasonal foods. Wee Mac made a happy threesome along with Sunlight Cream Ale and Osiris Pale Ale, complementing The Pita Pit's array of wraps and baked pita with hummus.

New Albanian Brewing Company is celebrating its eighth anniversary two weeks before Broad Ripple Brewpub mark its twentieth. With a nod to John Hill, Roger Baylor offers NABC VIII celebratory ale on tap. Roger notes: "Continuing the tradition of featuring the anniversary year number in the beer as much as reasonably possible, VIII features four base and four specialty malts, eight total, that build a rich golden hue and depth of flavor, defying the lightness of its appearance. The eight hops used are familiar 'foes' from the competitive Single Hop APA series, and each boil addition was a reunion of the previous head to head match ups, added in reverse chronological order. VIII is dry hopped with the eight hops to bring the aroma a complex boutique of the beautiful cone's best Pacific Northwest varietals."

But NABC now is taking a turn from BRBP's 'on tap only' specialty. More from Roger: "In the beginning of Bank Street [in downtown New Albany], it was our aim to package NABC beers in cans, but to be perfectly honest, we could not afford the required investment. Some day, I trust that canning will occur; until then, we've acquired a small bottling machine and soon will begin packaging in 22-oz bottles ('bombers' in the argot). The Elector label has been submitted for Federal approval, and graphics wizard Tony Beard is starting on the next label designs for the higher gravity beers in our line: Hoptimus, Thunderfoot, Elsa, Tunnel Vision and more."
