Oaken Barrel, Greenwood, 2010 Indiana State Fair gold medal and 2009 Best of Show PumpKwan Ale. Owner Kwang Casey claims, "It's the name that makes the beer." Head brewer Mark Havens and assistant brewers John Treeter and John Caveda defer demurely.

Nov. 3, Brugge, Tapping Upland's Triple Dragonfly.

Nov. 4, 7-9 p.m.; Binkley's, 5902 N. College Ave. Brew Club with Steve Theil from Sierra Nevada Brewing Company featuring six brews including Northern Hemisphere, a Fresh Hopped Ale with hops from the Yakima Valley in eastern Washington, and Estate Ale, made with organic wet hops and barley grown at the brewery in Chico and one of the few estate-made ales produced anywhere in the world. Sierra Nevada, currently celebrating its 30th anniversary, is credited as their "inspiration" by Indiana's pioneer professional brewers. Call 722-8888.

Nov. 4, 9 p.m.; BLU Lounge, 240 S. Meridian St. The public is invited to the 1st Annual Woodford Reserve Manhattan Experience competition "to target and challenge bartenders to invent new interpretations of the Manhattan cocktail that blend with the world's finest Kentucky super-premium bourbon," states John Kruse, Indiana Central Area Manager for Brown Forman Beverages, makers of Woodford Reserve. "Thirty-three Indiana bartenders [statewide] submitted recipes online. Seven finalists were selected to make their drinks for a panel of judges on Nov. 4. Winning mixologists are named 'Masters of the Manhattan' and receive an expense-paid trip to New York City to showcase their cocktails at a national finals exhibition in January." Woodford Reserve barrels are an aging feature in Indiana craft beers.

Nov. 9; Upland Tasting Room, 49th and College Ave. Upland is celebrating its one-year anniversary with live music from Gustav and food from Tiger & Taco. "Come in wearing an Upland shirt and get a free pint glass. If you show us a current, valid alcohol server's permit, you'll get a free (empty) growler," reports Charles Johnson. "Nov. 5-9 we'll have growler fill specials and Nov. 8, live music from Doubting Thomas." Call 602-3931.
