Best Local Latin American Restaurant

El Sol de Tala

It's always fun to cross the threshold from an uninspiring stretch of Washington Street to the El Sol's faux Mexican courtyard interior, complete with working fountain. You can find typical Mexican faves here - some topped or cooked in an excellent mole sauce - but what most impresses is El Sol's commitment to the vegetarian diner. Our favorite filling for vegetarian dishes is the huitlacoche - also known as corn truffle, corn fungus, or least appetizingly, corn smut. It grows like mutant cauliflower on an infected corn cob - and it is earthily delicious, particularly when combined with corn, onion and spices at El Sol.
