Fringe review: Driving the Body Back

Driving the Body Back
Swanderwoman Productions; Iowa
2 Stars

It is wise to approach this show as a series of poems rather than a linear narrative. The words are gracefully phrased and the lines are enthusiastically delivered, but the story is difficult to appreciate on any level beyond its clever turns of phrase and inventive language. There is an over-abundance of characters creating a poisonous scenario in which there are far too many "chefs in the kitchen." There are brief peaks of drama and intriguing Midwestern perspectives, but each time I found myself truly engaged the story jolted to a different scene; it is perhaps better appreciated by avid poetry aficionados.

Phoenix Theatre: Friday, Aug. 27, 9:00 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 28, 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, Aug. 29, 6:00 p.m.
