Giants of Theatre, Indianapolis

3 stars

Marian Underground: 317 New Jersey. A play that portrays Jesus, Shakespeare, Lincoln and Buddha as drinking buddies might seem sophomoric, but I bet most of the players are high school seniors, at least. Giants of Theatre, which performed at Fringe's youth forum last year (Gorrest Fump), joins the Fringe mainstream with a twisted innocence reminiscent of Mad TV. A hippy Jesus ponders pretzels, Shakespeare steals everyone's writing and a femme Lincoln advises his friends to "chill-lax." There's plenty to edit and crudities to make you wince, but there are also good lines, good timing and good karma.
