Fringe Review: Phil the Void: Spontaneous Dumbustion

Phil van Hest; Los Angeles

5 stars

ComedySportz Arena: 721 Mass Ave. Phil's new monologue about how a cat taught him to love again offers a sturdy framework for a set of carefully observed and almost always hilarious anecdotes, delivered in his fast-paced, not quite verbose style. Van Hest wears an undone bowtie and sometimes affects a stoner sensibility, but he's working when you're not looking, and his sense of timing and ability to work the room is top-notch. While his narrative about finding love in the most unexpected places is not unfamiliar, he gets to this basic truth via ruminations on brain chemistry, religious belief and genetic aberrations.
