CANVAS GARFIELD PARK WITH ORIGINAL ART AT TWO-DAY COMPETITION Cash prizes up to $1,000 will be awarded; pre-registration deadline is Friday Local residents drawn to a little friendly competition can brush up on their artistic skills at a unique, two-day contest at Garfield Park Arts Center this month. The 4th Annual Creative Native Art Competition offers cash prizes up to $1,000 for work created on Garfield Park property from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 24 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 25. Past entries have ranged from stained glass, sculptures and mixed media to drawing, painting and jewelry. A cash prize of $1,000 will be awarded for Best of Show. Two second-place winners will receive $500 each, and two third-place winners each will receive $250. The winning entries will become a part of the Arts Center's permanent collection and will be on display through Feb. 28, 2009. The Arts Center also will accept other donated pieces of art created during the competition, sponsored by Indy Parks & Recreation and The Friends of Garfield Park, Inc. Contest Guidelines: Participants must reside in Indianapolis. Participants can create work in any medium (2-D or 3-D). There are no resources for electronic media on-site at this time. All works must utilize the theme "Art … What Does it Mean?" Participants must provide all of their own materials and a protective drop cloth or tarp. Participants must complete works of art on Garfield Park property. Indoor and outdoor spaces available. The competition officially starts at the Garfield Park Arts Center at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24, and will end at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25. Working hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. Participants must be 18 years of age or older. Participants must pre-register by Jan. 16, 2009. The registration fee is $10 on or before Jan. 16. Late registrations will be accepted if space is available. The deadline for late registration is 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, and the fee is $15. Day of competition registrations will be accepted from 8:30-9 a.m., if space is available. Day of competition registration fee is $20. Participant check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 10 a.m. on both days. Participants may complete their work on Jan. 24, 2009. Pieces must be checked in with Arts Center staff before participants leave the facility for work to be considered in the jury process. Jury selections are final. Jurors are given two criteria to consider when evaluating work: Interpretation of Theme and Use of Media. Awards will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25. Entrants need not be present to win.
