- Rodeo Ruby Love
The annual cover band madness of Rock and Roll Prom in Bloomington is one of my favorite events of the year. The event, a benefit for Boxcar Books' Pages to Prisoners program, features collections of Bloomington and Indy musicians performing in reorganized classic acts.
"Pretty in Punk" was the theme of the 2012 event, which happened at Jake's on Walnut Street. I was already excited about the Chucks, mohawks and pink prom dresses sure to be at the show, but the list of bands just put the whole crazy event over the top. Pat Benatar, Fleetwood Mac, Joan Jett and the Black Hearts, DEVO and No Doubt were covered by members of Rodeo Ruby Love, Hot Mess, Rip Owczarski and the Morning Afters, The Size of Color, Minus World, Dreamers of the Ghetto, Kam Kama, Defiance, OH, Memory Map, Morrow, Alexander the Great, Good Luck, Fat Shadow, Busman's Holiday, Magnolia Electric Co. and Vinyl Fidelity. Now, that's an impressive lineup!
In related cover band-y news, The AV Club collects performances of modern bands covering classic songs. Fresh from their stop in Indy, here's The Head and the Heart covering Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way." (I've got to say, it comes nowhere close to the majestic version of "The Chain" played by a mix of performers on Saturday.)
The Head and the Heart covers Fleetwood Mac.
