Hitting the bricks with Ben Rose

On Thursday, poetry fans are in for a big treat. Indiana native and multifaceted performer Ben Rose (stage name: Kahlil Jahiz) will read at G. Simone's Cafe (112C South Main Street, Zionsville) as part of the monthly Poetry on Brick Street reading series. I’m especially looking forward to Thursday; it’s been years since I’ve heard Rose read. Part of that is because Rose was out of state for some time; I like poetry but I draw the line at stalking. I’m also excited about the event because I’ve not yet attended a Brick Street reading or visited G. Simone’s. It will be a night full of new!

Rose’s creative background includes work in radio, photography, film, and writing outside the poetic genre. He’s composed short fiction, a screenplay, released a volume of poetry, and occasionally blogs at http://www.myspace.com/kahliljahiz, where I enjoyed reading the following from his autobiographical statement:

Born again and again I rush sometimes to enlightenment, seeking the company of beings light heavy with nurture and wisdom beyond belief. I am one of two spirits… fetching light from the heavens and placing it within your soul that you might fly again as in ancient times.

I liked the glimpse into Rose’s psyche. His words are certainly nicer to read and far more inventive than the standard networking site intro that often includes astrological information and a nod to a favorite movie… says the Scorpio who likes The Shawshank Redemption.

Rose’s reading will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by an open mic. For more information about Thursday or the Brick Street series in particular, contact Barry Harris at 317-344-9838, Susan Miller at 317-587-1438, or email info@poetryonbrickstreet.org.
