(In lieu of the Starting Five, we offer this remembrance.)

Indianapolis has lost one of its brightest stars. Chris Maples, who was instrumental in the creation of Dad's Inc. for the Villages, who left that gig for an instrumental position with Partners in Housing and who was a founder of the Hoosier Beer Geek blog has died at the age of just 37.

His fellow Beer Geeks have left a touching tribute to the man they knew well here.

I knew Chris when he began his work with Dad's Inc., but I also admired the circle of craft-beer-freaks he gathered; I even had the honor of guest-blogging on the Hoosier Beer Geek site once or twice. Chris asked me to contribute a birdhouse to PIH's Birdhouse Challenge Fundraiser. It was a moment when I realized my efforts paled in comparison to some of the other entries - most notably Chris's, who constructed an incredible entry in the midst of organizing the fundraiser and everything else he was working on. I marveled at the energy Chris poured into everything he touched.

Chris had been battling an aggressive form of cancer when an infection overtook his system, a system weakened by chemo. Indy lost Chris on Sunday. Some memories of Chris are turning up on his Facebook page.

Chris leaves behind a wife and two boys, a family he absolutely adored. If you want to help the family as they plan for their future in this most terrible of times, skip the flowers and throw a buck or two this way:

Farewell, Chris. You're gone much too soon.
