The following is a press release from John Bartholomew, Public Information Officer at Indianapolis' Department of Metropolitan Development.

Mayor Ballard and neighborhood leaders today dedicated the International Marketplace Streetscape Project with three gateway markers and secondary markers. The markers are located on a pedestal in the medians at West 38th Street and High School Road, West 38th Street and Commercial Drive and Lafayette Road and I-65. The markers rise a total of 36 feet and feature a world globe and a banner. The secondary gateways are located at Lafayette Road at Pike Plaza and at 34th Street and West 38th Street and Moller Road.

Images on the streetscape elements were developed from photographs of the food, faces and fabrics of the International Marketplace. The globes on the gateways contain energy efficient lighting that will change color to signify cultural events and holidays.

"The International Marketplace represents Indy's own melting pot of culture," Mayor Ballard said. "The vibrant neighborhood has grown to become a destination in the city. This gateway and streetscape project will further define the area as a place that attracts the people and flavors of the world."

The $700,000 project includes sidewalks, crosswalks, bus shelters, three gateway structures and streetscape elements at secondary gateways/intersections. $350,000 of funding for the project came from the Department of Public Works and $350,000 from the Community Revitalization and Enhancement District designation (CRED).
