Napier was positively effusive about Kwanzaa Popps when he caught him with the IRB Sound Band at Vollrath a few months back. An excerpt: "He looked like a beautiful cross between a preacher, a pimp and Flavor Flav, and he sang the riddem like a bastard Marley child. The monstrously tight band behind him featured two keyboards, one that doubled on percussion, a badass drummer and a bassist who could keep up with him. When they locked into a groove on the mid-set highlight 'The Calling,' the band sounded amazing, especially considering that they've been gigging barely six months." Popps popped on the scene in the mid-‘80s and steadily built a following before leaving for the east coast in the mid-‘90s. He’s back in town and has booked gigs in several Indy nightclubs; this latest show, billed as the "rebirth of live reggae music in Indianapolis," will also feature dancehall DJs Higher Ground Movement.
