Since winning the National Book Award for her first collection, Presentation Piece, in 1970, Marilyn Hacker has been, in the words of Julia Alvarez, “one of our best singers—by turns elegiac and fierce, sweet and witty. With each new collection her voice grows richer, more resonant, sorrowing, and lovely.” She received a Lambda Literary award for Going Back to the River and Winter Numbers, for which she also won the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize. She has also been the recipient of the Paris Review’s Bernard F. Conners Prize,
