John Mellencamp will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award tonight (September 9th) at the 9th Annual Americana Music Association awards at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn. Mellencamp will be there to accept the award and to perform acoustically at the beginning of the show.

SIRIUS XM Satellite Radio will carry a LIVE broadcast on the Outlaw Country channel (Sirius 63, XM 12), and Folkalley.com will have a webcast (listen here)

The show starts at 7:30 p.m., and will be hosted by Jim Lauderdale. The house band will be led by Buddy Miller with Don Was on bass. Performers will include Emmylou Harris, The Avett Bros., Rosanne Cash, Rodney Crowell, Patty Griffin, Ryan Bingham, and Todd Snider

Mellencamp talked to Peter Cooper of The Tennessean about the award and his new record. He told Cooper good stories about recording "The Lonesome Jubilee" and playing pool with Minnesota Fats.

"I was acutely aware of how different Lonesome Jubilee was, simply because the guy I was making records with (Don Gehman) spent the entire record fighting with me, saying, 'Why are you doing this? You just made Scarecrow, and now why are we changing?” I said, 'We’re not changing, just moving a little bit further. We’re progressing.'” - JM
