Nappy Roots

When: Fri., Aug. 12, 9 p.m. 2011

Louisville-based hip-hop quintet Nappy Roots have nicely recovered from a rough patch in the early ‘00s, when they found themselves lost in the mix after Atlantic, the label for which they had recorded the multi-platinum Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz, merged with a couple other major labels. Since then, the group has established itself as an independent act, releasing work under their own imprint (N.R.E.G., or Nappy Roots Entertainment Group) and adjusting to a mixtape-based style of distribution and marketing. Through the changes, their work has remained true to a dictum stated in a line from a recent song, “Live & Die”: “Ain’t nothing wrong with being smart, black and proud.” With AudioDax and The Breakdown Kings.

Price: $12.
