Editor's Note: This week the NUVO news desk received the following letter to the editor from the Greater Indianapolis NAACP. To those interested in education reform within the city, the time is now to engage in the greater debate about how we can improve Indy's educational landscape. Please note the list of community discussions highlighted below. In addition, we've experienced a lull in submissions to our Perspectives in Education Series over the past few weeks. We hope the community - particularly anyone holding positions of educational leadership or (better yet) ACTUAL STUDENTS - will send new submissions. The goal is to publish a fresh entry each Thursday. Thank you for your consideration.

Letter to the Editor
Re: "WhatsPossibleIndy" community conversations on Education
From: Greater Indianapolis NAACP, Branch #3053
Date: August 13, 2012

The Greater Indianapolis NAACP Education Committee encourages all in the Indianapolis community to participate in one of the scheduled community conversations on education, being supported by the NAACP, Dr. Eugene White, Mind Trust, UNCF, the Mayor's Office, Urban League, Stand for Children, and almost 90 other partnering organizations. Certainly there may be legitimate concerns about the integrity of such conversations at this time. However, as one of our well-known and respected legislators has said to us all, "If you are not at the table, you are on the menu." Such is why your local NAACP has chosen to be one of the initial planning team partners.

Regardless of some possible differences with the mission and local/national actions of some of the planning partners, keep in mind that this is an opportunity due to the available resources being provided, to make our voices heard. For Indianapolis, this is a rare opportunity.

Go to the "" website and find a date and location that works for you. Or respond through video on the website and/or respond to the posted questionnaire. If you feel that there needs to be more emphasis on equity, less emphasis on standardized testing, a moratorium and greater accountability with charter schools, more cultural responsiveness, more state responsibility for all children to start school with the same opportunities for success, more support for community schools, that these conversations should be extended to all Marion County schools rather than just IPS, or whatever your concerns might be, make them known. If you don't see the questions that you are looking for, just state your concerns for the record, anyway. This is so critical in order to save the children of our beloved Indianapolis community. Solutions to the problems that we did not create should not be left to the politics of power, status, and wealth.

The following series of public conversations is focused on the following three core questions:

How can we ensure that all kids in IPS have access to a high-quality preschool program?

What is a great school and how do we ensure all schools are great for children?

How can we ensure neighborhoods have equitable access to great schools and diverse options to meet student needs?
