Stopping in at Broad Ripple Brewpub on June 8, we caught up with Brad Brookbank, former assistant brewer and now brewery representative for 450 North Brewing Company & Brix Haus Restaurant in Columbus, Ind. The distinction is the setting on a 200-acre heritage family farm going back 176 years, with handcrafted beer (450 North), wine (Simmons) and hard cider (Gnarly Grove) along with a working farm occupying all family members and a staff that feels like family, according to Brad. Simmons Winery opened June 1, 2000; 450 North Brewery opened 2012, followed by the cider works.
On the heels of a recent makeover at the E. County Road 450 N. location, the Simmons family is expanding to Shelbyville with a brewery and restaurant along the riverfront. Expect a Fall opening in Shelbyville accompanied by a first-of-its-kind craft beer themed Corn Maze Festival on October 1 at David and Brenda Simmons’ family farm in Columbus.

While at the Brew Pub, NUVO colleagues Katelyn and Casey joined the conversation and the beer drinking. We shared and sampled BRBP brewer Jonathon Mullens’ I Got Rye On It, served on cask for a smooth, spicy, crisp taste, as well as the all-around favorite Tart Lizzie and a new experience with Sybilla Single Hop Pale Ale. Hailing from Poland, Sybilla is a hop to follow—its initial herbal, crisp, citrus nose and taste opens to a tinge of pepper and a tang cloves as it warms. ‘A conversation hop,” concluded Brad.
