Record Store Day: I was a teenage music nerd

Last Saturday I ran into Indy CD and Vinyl and went up to the counter. Thinking it was Record Store Day, I asked where I could find the RSD-exclusive releases. As it turns out, I had jumped the gun and was a week early for RSD. Luckily for me, I am no stranger to feeling foolish.

This morning when I woke up, I double checked my calendar and made my way back to the store. I found the tiny Broad Ripple record shop to be brimming with eager customers. If you didn’t already know, Record Store Day is a day where bands, labels and independent record stores team up to encourage music fans to log off from their iTunes accounts, step out into the sunlight and go to their local record store and buy some real music.

To entice music fans, the collaborators behind RSD had orchestrated a series of special releases, exclusive to participating stores. These include both new material and reissues. Tegan and Sara, Mastodon, Devo, and The White Stripes were just a few of the artists to have records for RSD. You can check out the whole list here.

While I would have liked to have bought about half the stuff in the store, my wallet forced me to be a little more discriminatory with my purchases. While I was tempted by the Flaming Lips’ re-working of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon (with Star Death and the White Dwarves, who have an upcoming show at the Murphy building on May 7th), I ultimately settled on two: an Against Me! 7” single with “I Was A Teenage Anarchist” (I’m not sure what to think of it yet) and a Built To Spill single “Water Sleepers” (pretty awesome, especially the b-side).

It was good to see that so many people made it out to support their local record stores. It gives me hope that physical records will survive in some way, shape or form. I have no real problem with iPods or digital music, but nothing beats the feeling of holding a brand new record in your hands, putting the needle down (or simply pressing “play”) and truly appreciating the music. I can’t wait for next year’s RSD.
