Review: Mom and Pop Porno Shop at White Rabbit Cabaret

After successfully reviving the live sitcom Jesus Is My Roomie earlier this year, Defiance Comedy has now brought Mom and Pop Porno Shop back to the stage of the White Rabbit Cabaret — or I should call it a rerun?

Perhaps it would be germane to state that I am quite biased in favor of this type of classy material, but I do not think that anyone who is not amused by delightfully sticky blue comedy will be interested in this show in the first place. For those who are, you are in for a raunchy treat. Naturally, Defiance Comedy knows how to please a crowd, and their actors always seem to be having as much fun as the audience — frequently Defiance alumna Leah DeWalt couldn’t quite hide her chuckles, and I don’t blame her one bit.

Mom and Pop Porno Shop was not quite as tightly scripted as Jesus Is My Roomie, but then again, it is also a more heavily populated show. Director Matt Kramer did, however, make the wise decision to pare down the cast from its initial run. So while it is sad to see dim-witted porn star Chad sent to editorial limbo, he and his ilk were amalgamated into the new character “Bev,” a comedic goldmine played to great aplomb by Kelsey VanVoorst. VanVoorst also thoroughly won over the crowd when the fan required to parody the classic “Sexy Lady in the Wind” look broke down: undeterred, VanVoorst simply went up to her cast mate and blew on her.

This new run of Mom and Pop Porno Shop has also updated its lampooning of trite sitcoms du jour (goodbye Whitney, hello Two Broke Girls). Finally, it was a great thrill to see Rob Johansen back again in a show-stopping cameo as an aged, though, shall we say, functional applicant for the titular shop. This little divertimento completely brought the room to its knees with laughter. I hope Johansen and his bulb horn will return for future episodes.
