Indie folk band Shanren will bring their blend joyful music to Hanover College Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m. at the Lynn Center for the Fine Arts. Sponsored by Arts Midwest and the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China, the performance is part of the Community Arts Series.
The name “Shanren” literally means “mountain men.” The group fuses indigenous music from the mountainous Yunnan and Guizhou provinces of southwestern China with modern styles from around the globe. Diverse in plant and animal life, these provinces also lay claim to 56 Chinese ethnic groups. Shanren seeks to preserve the rich, but largely unknown, heritage of this region through its own compositions as well as through reworking local songs.
