Indiana State's Hulman Center welcomed the visiting IUPUI Jaguars on Saturday, December 21. The host Sycamores started strong then outpaced the Jags to a 81-61 victory.
After an early double-digit Sycamore lead, IUPUI battled back to get it close, 37-31, at halftime. It was an uphill struggle to get the game to within 3 points early second half, before a strong Sycamore defense helped pull away late.
ISU coach Greg Lansing commented on the defensive tightening in the second half. "It all boils down to getting stops, not letting them stand there at the free throw line shooting free throws, not giving them second shots... letting them get the loose balls."
The Sycamores were led by senior guard, Manny Arop, with 25 points and 6 rebounds. The team totalled 27 defensive rebounds. Center Justin Gant added 18 points as the team shot over 55% for the game.
Jaguar forward Marcellus Barksdale led his team with a 17-point, 11-rebound double-double. Mitch Patton added 15 points and Ian Chiles 13. IUPUI was held to only 6 scoring players for the game.
The first of a two-game road trip, IUPUI falls to 4-10 but will return home for a matchup against Drake, December 29th. Indiana State moves to 8-3, and will next face Belmont (8-5) on December 28th.
