On April 12, 2011, the nation began its 5-year commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War. On Thursday, June 4, 2015, the 19th Annual “Spirit of Freedom” event will be held to celebrate the African-American Soldiers who fought during that war. (Of the 1,537 United States Colored Troops [USCT] who represented Indiana during the CW, there are approximately 225 buried at Crown Hill in the National Cemetery.) “Spirit of Freedom” will be held from 10:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Crown Hill Cemetery. Presented by Crown Hill Heritage Foundation, Funeral Home, and Cemetery in partnership with Indianapolis Public Schools and Storyteller’s Drum, this annual tribute will include interactive historical presentations, Civil War replicas and a dedication ceremony.
