1816- Indiana becomes the 19th state. The town of Corydon is the capital, and Republican Jonathan Jennings is Governor— having been elected before statehood was confirmed. Jennings was a fierce anti-slavery advocate and believed in limiting the power of governors in favor of the Indiana General Assembly. He was forced to remove himself as governor due to financial troubles worsened by his refusal of a salary. Different times indeed....

1954- Jermaine Jackson is born in Gary. Once the lead guitarist for Jackson 5, he is now remembered for being the lead most-forgettable Jackson. At least Tito had a funny name...

2007- Beloved congresswoman Julia Carson passes away from lung cancer. She is succeeded in Indianapolis' 7th district by Andre Carson in a special election.
