Thumbs down: Restricting rights

In advancing a proposed state constitutional amendment ignoring the biological fact that some people are gay and the social fact that many gay people choose to make lifelong commitments to each other, state legislators may be doing more than just making it difficult for our corporations to recruit top talent to Indiana. A new report by Indiana Equality and students from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law outlines more than 600 state laws pertaining to the rights and responsibilities of married couples. In short, the report underscores the myriad ways the proposed amendment, if approved by voters, could codify discrimination against same-sex couples. Perhaps the GOP can author a position paper to help enlighten us: "Economic Development Through Regressive, Discriminatory Social Policy."
