Walking Tonic Ball - WILL MCCARTY

We know, we know. We've told you before, but we're going to tell you again: Tonic Ball is one of the single coolest nights of the year in Indianapolis. For the uninitiated: three mega-artists are divvied up amongst three venues in Fountain Square, and local bands spend the night covering their tracks. You're guaranteed to see some of your favorite local groups perform - and discover new favorites throughout the night. This year, the Ball is all about Tom Petty, The Grateful Dead and Pixies, who, together, create an almost unlimited discography from which to choose. That's par for the course for this year's Tonic, which is super-sized.

"We have 50 bands, the most ever, and added an extra 200 tickets to the event. [It's] happening on three different days [with Tonic Gallery and Tiny Tonic the week before Tonic Ball] And it will actually allow a longer jammier experience on the Grateful Dead stage at Fountain Square Theatre," says Kirsten Eamon-Shine, a Tonic Ball committee member.

All proceeds go to food rescue and job training organization Second Helpings, which feeds thousands of Indy residents every year.

Now for the bad news: Tonic 2013 is already sold out. But, for the lucky ones that snagged wristbands, we've created this handy map for the night. Use it to plan your routes between venues, and to catch up with area restaurants that are donating their proceeds to the cause.
