Bruce Pelkin is one of the most successful comedians to come out of Indianapolis. Performing under the stage name of “Hank McGill,” most of his success came in the early ‘90’s when I wasn’t allowed to watch The Simpsons—let alone visit a comedy club—but his legacy is celebrated across generations of local comedians.

This Friday Crackers is hosting a benefit for McGill’s family, who is mourning his passing from esophageal cancer at the age of 50, last Friday. All proceeds from the 8 pm show and a silent auction will go directly to his family.

I was three years old when McGill first took the stage at Crackers many years ago, so while I’m sad to say I never saw him perform live, his benefit comes with a recommendation from NUVO contributor Marc Allan who has been doing this for a much longer time than I.

The show will be headlined by Jimmy Pardo. If you happen to use Netflix instant watch, his Comedy Central special is currently available to stream, as is Nick Thune—who is performing at Crackers Downtown—but I think both would thrive much better in a club-setting than they do in their made-for-tv specials. There’s just something about the aesthetics of “Comedy Central Presents” that make really good comedians look really terrible; it’s like musicians on Letterman. No matter how good they are in concert, they always sound flat and out of key on those shows.

Also worth mentioning—if you like the widely overrated Rob Riggle (“Step Brothers,” the booze cruise episode of “The Office,” and those shitty Budweiser commercials) he’s at the IU Auditorium on Friday.
